50 Jahre nach Gaussen. Bemerkungen zur Anwendung historischer Vegetationskarten in mediterranen Ökosystemen im Rahmen der Global Change-Forschung

Abstract (englisch):

This study explores the application of historical vegetation maps—particularly those depicting real surface cover—in assessing vegetation responses to global climate change in Mediterranean ecosystems. While most historical vegetation maps focus on potential natural vegetation, the Carte de la Végétation de la France (e.g., Gaussen’s 1948 Perpignan map) uniquely documents actual vegetation cover, enabling intertemporal comparisons. Fieldwork in the Canigou Massif and Corbières maritimes validates Gaussen’s (1934) and Flahault’s (1937) identification of a thermomediterranean vegetation zone, contradicting Braun-Blanquet’s (1936) classification. However, no clear climate-driven expansion of thermomediterranean species has been detected. Instead, the study highlights the increasing presence of exotic species (e.g., Saccharum spontaneum, Cortaderia selloana, Carpobrotus edulis), likely linked to land-use changes and fire dynamics rather than climate warming alone. The research underscores the value of historical vegetation maps—when combined with systematic fieldwork and GIS analysis—for detecting long-term vegetation shifts, emphasizing their underutilized potential in Global Change research.
