How Gender Influences the Use of Space: A Participatory Research on Spatial Planning in Fishing Villages in Central Java and West Aceh, Indonesia

Wiyatiningsih

Abstract:
The significance of participatory research for achieving a participatory spatial planning may be strengthened by the involvement of gender in the analysis of space. The structuring of space in the Javanese and Acehnese fishing villages shows how gender role greatly influences the use of space. This represents the fragmentation of village both socially and spatially. A comprehensive understanding of such a structure is important for relevant development agencies to make a just spatial planning.
