Biology and biotechnology of dissimilatory metal reduction in Shewanella oneidensis

Abstract:
Dissimilatory metal reduction is a form of anaerobic respiration that uses solid metal oxide minerals as terminal electron acceptors. One important model organism for this form of respiration is the gamma-proteobacterium Shewanella oneidensis. Electrons that are derived from oxidative processes at the cytoplasmic membrane are transferred via c-type cytochromes through the periplasm and further to the outer membrane. The terminal electron acceptor is reduced outside of the cell.
