Scanning tunneling spectroscopy investigations of gold and adsorbates on Au have been realized at ambient conditions. Due to the hydrophilic character of the surface, a thin water layer was adsorbed. Fast bias ramps with a few hundreds of µs duration have been applied to overcome the emerging difficulties. Furthermore discrete tunnel current changes could be observed with the used high-frequency setup. The origins of these fluctuations were examined both in tunneling regime and at nanocontacts.
