EFFEKTE im Pavillon – Wissenschaftsdienstag

This contribution to the EFFEKTE science fair was organised by the Duale Hochschule Baden Württemberg (DHBW) Karlsruhe and the Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC) of KIT. In his presentation, Dr. Alexander Schug, head of the research group multiscale biomolecular simulation, explained why supercomputers and computer simulation in life sciences today are indispensable research tools. The simulation of complex molecular processes complements traditional research but still poses major challenges. In protein folding, the speed of molecular movements require simulation time steps as small as a few femto-seconds which even on large supercomputers allows the simulation of only very small sequences. ... mehrDiseases like Alzheimer are related to changes in protein folding and the research of the group therefore contributes to insight and developments of treatments. After the presentation the public joined in an energetic and lively discussion into this interesting use of modern information technology.
