Elastocaloric Microcooling

This work investigates the potential of the elastocaloric effect for solid-state based cooling in small-scale applications. Thin TiNi-based shape memory alloy (SMA) samples showing high elastocaloric effects are studied by uniaxial tensile tests and infrared thermography. Miniature heat pumping devices are developed, which are based on antagonistically coupled SMA bridges. Demonstrators reach temperature lifts up to 9.4 K and coefficients of performance around 3.
