Abstract (englisch):

The data sets comprise hourly congestion data of the transmission system operator 50 Hertz from 2015 to 2017. 50 Hertz GmbH and TenneT GmbH are the TSOs in Germany, which suffer the most from congestion in their grids (96 % of German transmission grid congestion appears here). While other German TSOs do not publish their respective congestion data, 50 Hertz GmbH provides hourly values. We transformed the data from categorical and numerical information into binary variables to provide an easier starting point for further analysis. Check the "Read me" section for further information.

This data is part of a larger data set on congestion in the German electricity grids from 2015 to 2017. The related datasets are referenced below.

The publication of this data set was supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Research Training Group GRK 2153: Energy Status Data - Informatics Methods for its Collection, Analysis and Exploitation.

The data is available for the time of 1/1/2015 until 12/31/2017 for 200 lines, which were in operation during this time.
There are two different data sets, which were transformed differently to provide different possibilities for further exploration.

Data set "lineloaddata50percentthreshold" has the following binary encoding:

  • 0 - lines having a load of up to 50 % or below of their thermal capacity limit
  • 1 - lines having a load of more than 50 % of their thermal capacity limit
  • NaN - no data available

Data set "lindloaddata_70percentthreshold":

  • 0 - lines having a load of up to 70 % or below of their thermal capacity limit
  • 1 - lines having a load of more than 70 % of their thermal capacity limit
  • NaN - no data available

The date format is (mm/dd/yyyy). Please be aware of this while reading in the data. The used separator is ',' (.csv).
Every transmission line has a distinct column comprising its binary information about its congestion state as explained before. The line / column names are identical to the coding of line names 50 Hertz GmbH uses.
