This study analyzes German travel guides’ portrayal of the Azores, contrasting published narratives with field observations from 1999–2000 excursions. While guides accurately highlight the archipelago’s volcanic landscapes, biodiversity, and tourist appeal (e.g., Capelinhos, whale-watching), they overstate locals’ English proficiency. Surprisingly, French—not English—emerges as the dominant foreign language, reflecting historical ties to francophone emigration and education. Tourist surveys confirm the islands’ natural allure (Ilhas verde in mare azul) and low-crime authenticity, though infrastructure (e.g., flight delays) remains a challenge. The study critiques guidebook clichés while validating the Azores’ status as a nature paradise, urging nuanced travel planning.
