How to support entrepreneurs in searching for sustainable business models – A systematic review of educational settings

Abstract:

Sustainable development (SD) has become an important topic of discussion, especially after the introduction of the definition by the so-called “Brundtland Report” in 1987 (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). Since this publication, awareness but also the concern of society for sustainability issues is increasing (Fleaca et al. 2018; Filser et al. 2019). In order to address SD, the sustainable development goals (SDG’s) compromising 169 targets were defined in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly. As entrepreneurship is increasingly recognised as a solution to various economic, social and environmental challenges (Filser et al. 2019), it was identified as a key element, as it is expected to contribute to all three pillars of SD by driving economic growth, promoting sustainable agriculture and innovation, increasing social cohesion, reducing inequalities, introducing climate change mitigation technologies and establishing environmentally sustainable practices and consumption patterns (Hall et al. 2010; UN General Assembly 2016).
