Abstract (englisch):

This talk provides an overview about current research activities on pulsed power technologies and applications at KIT. In the first part the presentation will focus on the applications of material processing by pulsed electron beams. A 120 kV solid-state pulse generator of 50 ns rise time with arbitrary pulse shapes will be presented, and a new laser-induced fluorescence-dip diagnostic for measuring weak electric fields in low density pulsed plasmas will be discussed.
In the second part of the lecture, various applications of pulsed electric fields (PEF) will be introduced. We will particularly focus on those of nanosecond to microsecond duration with electric field strengths of few to a few tens of kV/cm that are thereby leading to electroporation of biological cell membranes. Due to the particular advantage of PEF treatment, regarding separability of the biomass, a ´holistic´ approach to the energetic and material use of microbial biomass, such as algae and yeasts, will be discussed.
