Abstract:

In order to keep up with the increasing complexity of technologies, rapid change and intensifying competition, it is becoming increasingly important for technology-based companies to select innovative applications for new or existing technologies. The selection of applications, which is known to be a very critical phase for the subsequent success of the company, is still partly made on the basis of intuition instead of making decisions based on solid, objective criteria. While previous research examines ideas and the process of idea generation and identification, none of the work deliberately focuses on technology-based ideas. It also remains unclear whether the criteria introduced in theory can be implemented across companies in practice and to all kinds of different-sized companies. This study aims to fill this research gap in order to identify the crucial evaluation criteria for technology-based companies and improve the selection of applications for technologies in the future.
