Abstract:

In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNT) were used as an additive in coating inks for catalyst layers for PEM
electrolyzers and fuel cells. Catalyst layers with and without CNT were prepared by direct membrane coating and
analyzed for cracking behavior. The influence of CNT on crack prevention is discussed by varying the film
thickness. Layers with CNT show no or less cracks at the same film thickness. Increasing the drying rate by raising
the film temperature has no effect on crack formation, which allows shorter production times. The distribution
and interaction of CNT in the microporous system are also discussed.
