Online Course: Good Research Practice

Based on the “Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice” published by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) the course lays the foundation for compliant, responsible behaviour during student’s studies. It allows students to get familiar with the structure of the scientific system in Germany and it explains how research misconduct is defined and how science uses self-monitoring to avoid such rule violations. Case studies are used to show potential pitfalls for students when they practice research (e.g. in practical training, courses or theses). Providing practical orientation, students are invited to transfer this knowledge to their own research processes and embrace the rules of scientific work. The DFG recommends the course as a best-practice example for teaching good scientific practice: all teaching and exercise texts are licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0, allowing educators and advisors to incorporate them into their own formats. The Open Courses KIT portal provides selected online courses from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Participation in all offered courses is free of charge and has no prerequisites. To access the offerings, you need to register on the platform (login with Shibboleth is possible).

The online course is part of the e-learning portfolio “helpBW”, which includes several standalone online courses aimed at developing academic information and writing skills and covers the entire academic journey. “helpBW” was developed at KIT by KIT-Library and the Schreiblabor (HoC) in collaboration with other universities in Baden-Württemberg and funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg.
