Abstract (englisch):

Illite is a clay mineral, which is present in many natural clay formations that are considered as potential host rock for nuclear waste repositories. As part of the geological barrier and in connection with safety assessments, it is therefore essential to know its retention capability with respect to radionuclides with long half-lives and to quantify their potential migration. In this context, diffusion experiments in combination with reactive transport simulations are a powerful tool to unravel the movement of radionuclides through porous clay systems.

In this study, first long-term investigations of Np diffusion through compacted Illite du Puy (1600 kg/m3) are presented. Two experiments, referred to as Np-1 and Np-2, were conducted under ambient conditions at pH 4.7±0.2 using a well-established set-up. The clay samples with a thickness of about 10 mm and a diameter of about 25.4 mm were placed in diffusion cells between two stainless steel filter plates. On the upstream side, each diffusion cell was connected to a source reservoir, respectively, each containing the background electrolyte (0.1 mol/L NaClO 4, 1·10-4 mol/L KCl, 5·10-3 mol/L 2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid pH buffer, 1·10-3 mol/L NaN3) and 237 Np(V) with an initial concentration of 1.5·10 -5 mol/L. ... mehr
