Abstract:

Penning mixtures are used to reduce the ignition voltage of gas discharge lamps. We measured ignition
currents of five different Penning mixtures in inductively driven argon lamps, which were built for UV
disinfection applications. A Penning mixture of 0.5% neon in argon shows a reduced ignition current in an
inductively driven lamp similar to the Penning effect described in literature for lamps with electrodes.
