This article presents a preliminary study on register variation in contemporary German. The study is based on a multi-register corpus and uses the multidimensional analysis, a methodological approach from corpus linguistics which uses computational linguistic tools and statistical procedures to identify groups of characteristics that cooccur in high frequency in the texts. After the identification of the groups, a qualitative analysis is performed to determine the communicative functions or dimensions, that the co-occurring characteristics have in the texts. In this study, 47 linguistic variables were used and five dimensions were identified. The interpretation of these dimensions, however, is provisional and will serve as basis for the main analysis.
