Abstract (englisch):

On February 12, 2026, Storm Nils struck the Leucate region, reinforcing its reputation as a "land of wind and sun" when the meteorological station at Cap Leucate recorded unprecedented wind gusts of 157.7 km/h. The storm caused significant local damage, including destroyed roofs, uprooted trees, and the temporary closure of key transport routes such as the D627 and the A9 motorway due to overturned vehicles and flooding. The Atlantic coast, particularly in the Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne departments, experienced severe flooding.
This event is examined in the context of ongoing climate change in the Mediterranean, referencing co-supervised research on early signs of climate change between Cap Leucate and Cap Béar. The blog post highlights how extreme weather events, combined with recurring droughts and rising temperatures, pose substantial challenges for local agriculture, water management, and coastal resilience. The author also notes the lack of comprehensive documentation of Storm Nils in French Wikipedia, contrasting it with a personal account of a rare 2012 ice event in Port-Leucate.

Le 12 février 2026, la tempête Nils a frappé la région de Leucate, confirmant sa réputation de « pays du vent et du soleil » avec des rafales atteignant 157,7 km/h, un record pour la station météorologique du Cap Leucate. ... mehr
