Promoted by favorable biogeographical circumstances, the Leucate region on the French Mediterranean coast possesses a relatively high biodiversity. Here, the valuable
coexistence of rich biodiversity and traditional forms of land use found throughout the European Mediterranean basin persisted until about 1970. Thanks to agricultural quality products such as the famous Fitou and Muscat wines, culinary Specialties (e.g., oysters), and conventional touristic activity, traditional forms of
agricultural land use prevailed until the 70s, causing less dramatic land abandonment, desertification, and loss of landscape heterogeneity than elsewhere in the Languedoc. Although statistical data are scarce, traditional touristic activities in La
Franqui (1850) and Leucate Plage (1920), the two "stations anciennes" of the Leucate area, seem to have been highly important factors in maintaining traditional land use patterns. Land abandonment increased following the successful development of the new tourist resort of Port Leucate, but iodiversity and landscape heterogeneity remained higher than in other Languedoc regions.
