Abstract (englisch):

This study examines the phenological and ecological significance of the blooming Acacia dealbata (mimosa) in Grünstadt, Rhineland-Palatinate, as an early indicator of spring in a region undergoing climatic transition. Based on observations recorded in March 2026, the study highlights the mimosa’s successful flowering—a species traditionally confined to Mediterranean climates—as evidence of shifting seasonal patterns and reduced frequency of extreme cold events in the Upper Rhine Valley. Historical weather data from the Grünstadt-Sausenheim meteorological station reveal a notable decline in severe winter temperatures since 2012, facilitating the survival and flowering of Mediterranean species such as mimosa and olive trees (Olea europaea).
The study contextualizes these observations within broader trends of climate change, including the naturalization of Mediterranean flora in non-native environments and the emergence of experimental oleiculture in the region. It also addresses the potential ecological risks, such as the invasive tendencies of Acacia dealbata in suitable climates, while acknowledging the limited risk in the densely cultivated Unterhaardt region. ... mehr
