Abstract:

This study focuses on synthesizing and comprehensively characterizing a Schiff base copper complex, Cu-SB, with particular attention to its anion recognition abilities and antimicrobial properties. A significant highlight of the study is the complex's exceptional sensitivity towards azide ions (N$_3$$^−$), exhibiting a detection limit as low as 8.1 × 10$^{−8}$ M. The selective interaction between the Schiff base copper complex and N$_3$$^−$ ions was explored through spectroscopic techniques, revealing strong binding affinity and reliable detection capabilities. The 1:1 binding stoichiometry of Cu-SB complex and azide ion is further supported by single crystal XRD analyses. Beyond its sensing abilities, the Cu-SB complex demonstrated moderate antimicrobial activity, effectively inhibiting the growth of both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The antimicrobial performance underscores the potential of Cu-SB as a multifunctional material that integrates chemical sensing with biological applications.
