Abstract (englisch):

The first observations of Common Swifts (Apus apus) on April 29, 2026, in the skies of Grünstadt (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) mark the transition to the phenological "early summer", defined by the flowering of Sambucus nigra (Black Elder) according to the German Weather Service (DWD). This annual migration, with departures typically occurring by late July or early August, serves as a bioindicator for climatic and ecological shifts in Central European urban environments.

The author’s ornithological observations evoke the work of Gérard Gory, renowned in France as "Monsieur Martinets" for his expertise on swifts, and René Jeantet, the former curator (1959–1995) of the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de Nîmes, whose leadership opened the author’s eyes to the beauty of the Garrigues de Nîmes and Costière du Gard landscapes. These reflections are contextualized alongside Alfred Engler’s comprehensive work, “Mauer- und Alpensegler. Flugakrobaten ohne Grenzen” (2025), which the author highlights as a definitive reference deserving of a French translation.

Parallel to these ornithological musings, the reading of Galia Ackerman’s “Traverser Tchernobyl” (2022) prompts a discussion of the long-term socio-ecological impacts of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, an event that coincided with the author’s geography studies at the University of Mannheim. ... mehr
