Abstract (englisch):

The catalyst coated membrane and gas diffusion layers are core components in proton exchange membrane fuel cells, accounting for approximately 60% of the total stack cost. During the manufacturing and assembly processes, these components undergo various handling operations, from web handling to vacuum gripping. However, maintaining optimum material properties regarding functionalities while ensuring manufacturing compatibility remains challenging. Inappropriate handling processes can induce excessive stresses or deformations, potentially leading to mechanical degradation and reduced component lifetime. This study investigates the critical stress situations using analytical and numerical modelling to identify the optimum process parameters and thereby enhance the economic viability of fuel cell production.
