Abstract:

This work introduces a direction of arrival (DoA) supported, radar-based localization method with Doppler tags and is a pre-study for the hardware selection and extended localization measurements with a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The robustness and accuracy of pure trilateration and pure triangulation can be improved by the combination of both methods. This DoA supported combination is weighted based on the number of channels and the according triangulation’s achievable accuracy. Measurements with a first radar are examined and optimal lower bounds for the error variances are calculated to demonstrate the potential improvement of the method. The combined method shows the potential to improve the localization accuracy and robustness to the field of view (FoV) of radar and tags for large radar arrays.
