Abstract (englisch):

This autoethnographic study examines the Tunisian Revolution of January 2011 through the lens of transboundary emotional and intellectual connections, as observed from Fohrenbühl (Black Forest, Germany). The author, who had previously co-organized a 2006 GTZ seminar on climate change in Tunisia at the same location with the late Prof. Gonzague Pillet and Anna Viola Mai, reflects on the dissonance between the serene silver fir forests (sapinières, Abies alba) of Fohrenbühl and the violent suppression of protests in Sidi Bouzid, Kasserine, and Thala. The crepuscular light filtering through the forest canopy symbolically linked the author’s thoughts to Tunisian colleagues and friends, perceived to be in immediate danger. The essay critiques the initial silence of European media and the complicity of French and German diplomacy with the Ben Ali regime, highlighting the catalytic role of visual evidence (e.g., the widely circulated photo of a young woman killed in Sidi Bouzid on January 10, 2011) in shifting global awareness. The author argues that Tunisia’s middle class and civil society uniquely possess the capacity to establish a secular democracy in the Arab world, drawing parallels to the French Revolution of 1789. ... mehr
