Abstract (englisch):

This blog post examines the role of local cultural infrastructure—such as independent bookstores, hospitals, and train stations—in shaping rural quality of life, using Wissembourg (Alsace, France) and Schramberg (Black Forest, Germany) as case studies. It explores structural decline in peripheral regions, including the closure of bookstores, hospitals, and railway lines, and its impact on cultural identity, mobility, and healthcare access.

Special focus is placed on bookstores as cultural hubs, exemplified by Librairie À Livre Ouvert in Wissembourg, and their vulnerability to demographic and economic pressures. The analysis also interprets disease narratives (e.g., cancer, "Krabs") in literature and biography (e.g., Pierre Kretz, Sibylle Havemann) as reflections of societal upheaval. Additionally, it connects landscape perception (e.g., Lauter Valley, Blackcap warbler) with socio-economic and health-geographic questions, particularly concerning reintegration after serious illness and the importance of infrastructure for rural participation.

... mehr
