The High Power Grid Lab: A novel PHiL Research Infrastructure for Medium-Voltage Power Electronics

Abstract:

This paper introduces the High Power Grid Lab (HPGL), a Power Hardware-in-the-Loop research infrastructure for grid components up to 20 kV ac. The HPGL is integrated into the existing Energy Lab at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and offers a flexible emulation environment that supports a wide range of test scenarios for both AC and DC applications. The use of Modular Multilevel Converters as grid emulators enables high dynamic requirements to be met and closed-loop capability to be ensured. A scaled demonstration system is designed and put into operation to test the signal processing architecture, dynamic behavior, and closed-loop capability in advance.
