Abstract (englisch):

The third body behavior strongly influences the friction and wear behavior of sliding components, but its formation and material properties are poorly understood. In recent experiments, we studied the tribological behavior of the third body formation in fretting wear and up to 800 °C. The third body was investigated ex-situ using a variety of analytical methods in order to clarify the influence on the wear behavior as it induces the change of tribological mechanisms from abrasion to oxidation and adhesion of wear particles to the formation of a glaze layer in the HT range. Therefore, the transition from oxidational wear to the formation of the glaze layer was studied for several tribological pairings [1,2]. Also, atmospheric change result in a shift of the wear mechanisms due to the availability of atmospheric oxygen [2].
Furthermore, by recreating the glaze layer, it was attempted to provide a wear resistant coating for high temperature applications [3].
