Abstract:

Given the current rise of new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, we are well advised to reconsider the deliberately immoral use of science and technology and ideologies in which pride in technoscientific superiority plays a key role. One task here is to rethink discourse on the role of technology in the ‘Western’ ideological reflection of geopolitical power constellations at a time of heightened international tensions. Several seminal works have emphasised the ideological function that such discourse has played in justifying Western imperialism. It is time to revisit the critique of Eurocentrism in the light of the question of modern technology. In the current situation of deep crisis (not only) in the ‘West’, overcoming certain ‘Western’ metaphysics and ideologies of technology also appears to be crucial for the global adaptation of AI systems to human expectations, values and interests and for the realisation of social and moral progress with them.
