Abstract (englisch):

In this blog post, Christophe Neff reflects on the implications of artificial intelligence for literary creation, drawing on the controversy surrounding Thélyson Orélien’s 2026 novel “C’était ça ou mourir”. The allegations of AI-assisted writing have sparked debates about authorship, plagiarism, and the legitimacy of literary awards, while diverting attention from the novel’s literary content. Neff places these questions in a broader historical context, recalling earlier controversies over literary authorship, particularly those surrounding Mikhail Sholokhov’s And Quiet Flows the Don. He argues that clear rules should be established for the use of AI in literature, distinguishing between acceptable applications, such as correcting spelling and typographical errors, and the systematic use of AI in the writing process. These guidelines should be defined in advance by authors, publishers, and literary award committees. Beyond the technological and ethical debate, Neff emphasizes the importance of preserving literary judgment and readers’ autonomy. He also expresses concern about the public hostility directed at Orélien, suggesting that the controversy risks overshadowing both the novel itself and its exploration of the lived experiences of migrants to North America. ... mehr
