Abstract:

$\textbf{PURPOSE:}$ Accelerometers are widely used to assess physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep in health research. However, inconsistent reporting of key information such as device specifications, data processing methods and analytic decisions limits transparency, comparability and reproducibility. We aimed to develop consensus-based reporting guidance to standardise and improve accelerometry reporting.

$\textbf{METHODS:}$ Following the EQUATOR Network framework for developing reporting guidance, we conducted a multi-phase project. First, a scoping review identified existing guidance and informed candidate reporting items. Following this, an international, 2-stage eDelphi survey was conducted to rate item importance. Items reaching predefined consensus thresholds (≥70% critically important) were retained. Finally, an online consensus meeting finalised the reporting checklist.

$\textbf{RESULTS:}$ From 47 publications identified in the scoping review, 124 candidate items were extracted and synthesised. A refined set of items were then presented in the eDelphi survey, with participants (Round 1 n=111; Round 2 n=93) from over 25 countries, including researchers, clinicians, journal editors and device manufacturers, rating item importance. ... mehr
