Abstract:

Abstract (englisch):

Abstract
This study explores the structural, energetic, and hydration dependent behavior of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+-saturated montmorillonites by combining Density Functional Theory (DFT-D3) simulations with experimental characterization of natural clays (Calcigel and Secursol UHP). Computational analyses show that the interlayer cations exert a decisive influence on the stability, swelling, and mechanical response. Na+ and Ca2+-homoionic saturated montmorillonite are the most stable, while K+ and Mg2+ exhibit lower stability. Total energy minimization reveals that electrostatic and dispersion interactions, rather than ionic radius alone, govern structural equilibrium. ... mehr
