The transition to an open-source system represents a strategic decision for academic libraries, involving far-reaching technical, organizational, and financial implications. The KIT Library took this step in 2023 by implementing Koha, a widely used open-source library system. This paper outlines the decision-making process, project planning, and implementation of the migration, as well as experiences and perspectives from live operation. These demonstrate that the choice of open-source software is not merely a question of cost but above all a contribution to digital sovereignty and strategic flexibility.
