Abstract (englisch):

In the last decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the healthcare field, particularly medical image analysis, by enabling the automated learning of feature representations from large-scale datasets across a wide range of medical tasks. However, its broader clinical adoption, especially in the imaging context, remains constrained by the difficulty of collecting large, heterogeneous training datasets. Patient data are subject to strict regulatory frameworks, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which impose substantial barriers to multi-centre data sharing and often render large multi-centre centralised training impractical.

Furthermore, AI models trained on data from a single or a limited number of institutions are prone to important performance degradation when deployed in unseen clinical environments, owing to variability in acquisition protocols, scanner hardware, and patient populations.

Federated Learning (FL) is able to address these concerns by enabling collaborative model training without sharing raw data, thereby preserving privacy and improving exposure to diverse data distributions. Despite its demonstrated effectiveness for image classification and segmentation tasks, the application of FL to medical Image-to-Image (I2I) translation was explored only in the field of cross-modality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) translation prior to this work. ... mehr
