Abstract:

The German Kopernikus initiative, launched in 2016 as one of the country's largest energy research programs, is now completing its third and final phase. This paper reports results from three complementary flagship projects - ENSURE, P2X, and SynErgie - that collectively address the transformation of electricity networks into active, multi-vector energy backbones capable of meeting Germany's 2045 climate neutrality targets. Building upon fundamental research in Phase 1 and pilot-scale demonstrations in Phase 2, the current phase focuses on large-scale validation and the translation of research outcomes into grid-ready solutions.

Results are organized into three thematic clusters. The first cluster, sector-coupled system integration, presents advances in coordinating distributed energy resources across multiple carriers. A two-stage graph neural network architecture accelerates energy hub dispatch optimization by a factor of 500 compared to conventional power flow calculations while maintaining a mean squared error of only 1.21 percent, even for distribution grids not included in training data. A low-voltage direct current demonstrator featuring a 1 MW solid-state transformer and ±700 V bipolar distribution validates scalable DC grid concepts for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. ... mehr
