Measurement of the Tritium Pumping Properties of a 4.2 K Argon Condensate for the Cryogenic Pumping Section of KATRIN

Abstract:
his work describes measurements of the tritium suppression factor of a cryo-pump that uses argon condensate at 4.2 K as adsorbent. Such a pump will be used in the forthcoming tritium beta decay experiment KATRIN (Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment) in order to keep its spectrometers essentially free from tritium. Only then will KATRIN be able to determine the electron neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV.
