Abstract:

The increasing share of inverter-based resources and the decrease of conventional inertia provided by generators lead to the demand of grid-forming control approaches and their profound testing and validation in a realistic environment. This contribution introduces a European 9-Bus benchmark grid model as base for validation and testing of these converters and their control by means of detailed EMT simulations. The grid model is based on the IEEE 9-Bus Benchmark Model and adapted to European grid conditions. To demonstrate its feasibility and suitability the Synchronverter as grid-forming converter control approach has been tested and validated under various grid conditions and for several fault scenarios considering all sources as inverter-based. The EMT simulation results of the European 9-bus grid evince the Synchronverter’s capability to operate not only parallel with other grid-forming controlled inverters but also in combination with a great share of grid-following controlled resources.
