Abstract:
Abstract (englisch):
Fuel cells are a promising technology for the desired energy transition. However, to be adopted more widely, the systems must be cheaper and improved in terms of performance and durability. At the heart of the widely applicable polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is the double-sided catalyst-coated membrane (CCM). This is where the crucial mass transport of the reactants and the electrochemical reactions take place during operation. The costs and performance parameters of the overall system are optimized at the CCM. The CCM production process influences these properties. ... mehrTherefore, the manufacturing process is a key factor in reducing costs and enhancing the performance and service life of the CCM, and consequently, the entire fuel cell. This requires a better understanding of the manufacturing process and a systematic investigation of the underlying effects.
This study focuses on the production of CCM for PEMFCs, contributing to the aforementioned goals and enhancing the understanding of the manufacturing process. Specifically, it investigates the production of Pt/C-based catalyst inks and their application to the proton-conducting membrane. Three key aspects of CCM production are examined: the formulation and processing of the catalyst ink; the challenges of membrane direct coating (MDC); and solvent evaporation from the catalyst layers of the CCM.
