Abstract (englisch):

The August 1949 mega-fire in the Forêt des Landes (Southwest France) destroyed 50,000 hectares of Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster) forest, claimed 82 lives (mostly firefighters), and remains one of Europe’s deadliest wildfires. Unlike typical Mediterranean fires, its extreme behavior—driven by high fuel loads—mirrored Pacific Coast mega-fires, demonstrating that large, catastrophic wildfires can occur in temperate European forests under dry, hot conditions. The blogpost remembering this event, largely erased from collective memory, was among the first texts (written in July 2009) to forecast increased wildfire risks due to global warming and climate change. It also remains one of the most-read articles on the paysages blog, as highlighted in the 2026 annual reflection (Paysages – dix-septième année d’existence sur la toile). This historical event underscores the need to revisit such cases as critical references for understanding and preparing for future wildfire risks in non-Mediterranean Europe.

En août 1949, un méga-feu a ravagé 50 000 hectares de la Forêt des Landes (Sud-Ouest de la France), dominée par le Pin maritime (Pinus pinaster), causant la mort de 82 personnes, principalement des pompiers. ... mehr
